Vivid aurora lights up Finland’s Lapland, visible as far south as Italy and Ukraine

The display over Rovaniemi intensified three times, with green and red lights visible to the naked eye; another coronal mass ejection could bring more auroras in the coming nights.

A colourful aurora illuminated the sky over Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland on Saturday night.

The aurora over Rovaniemi, on the Arctic Circle in Finnish Lapland, was captured by a local photographer, who said the display was the strongest since a similar geomagnetic storm in January 2026.

Auroras were spotted as far south as Italy, Corsica and Ukraine, while in Rovaniemi on Finland's Arctic Circle, the skies remained illuminated for hours. The display intensified three times, with vivid green and red auroras clearly visible to the naked eye.

More auroras could be visible over the coming nights, as another coronal mass ejection is expected to reach Earth.
